Key Concepts

Together we will learn about these fundamental building blocks of drawing:

Observation & Details: Drawing helps artists develop their ability to observe and represent the world around them. By learning to carefully observe details and relationships between objects, artists can translate what they see onto paper, improving their visual perception and representation skills.
Line & Shape: Lines are marks in any length or direction. Enclosed lines create 2D shapes. Line and shape make up the skeleton of a drawing. Artists combine different types of lines and shapes to represent 2D objects and create 3D forms.
Value & Color: Color is what we see when different wavelengths of light bounce off objects. Value is how light or dark a color is. When drawing, artists use value and color to create contrast, depth and a sense of emotion in artwork.
Proportion & Scale: Scale refers to how big or small an object is in a drawing. Proportion is how different sized objects work together to create the whole picture. Proportion and scale are important when drawing realistically. Artists use grids to measure proportions to make sure the parts of a drawing are the correct size.

Color & Value: Create a value scale by mixing tints, shades and tones
Scale & Proportion: Utilize a grid to recreate an image in a bigger scale
3D Forms: Choose a 2D shape and add color and value to transform it into a 3D form
