Key Concepts
Together we will learn about these fundamental building blocks of origami
- Basics: Artists create origami by folding and transforming sheets of paper. Origami can be made up of a single piece of paper, or multiple for more complex constructions. Artists typically use square paper of various sizes to create origami on different scales.
- Details: Artists can draw or collage on finished origami to give it meaning. Multiple origami constructions can be combined to create a scene or tell a story. Artists can present their origami as hanging mobiles, 3D dioramas, wearable fashion and more.
- Math: Origami utilizes different math concepts like symmetry, geometry, proportion, measurement, angles and fractions. The smaller the paper, the more difficult the fold.
- Technique: Artists make precise and accurate folds to create successful origami. If one fold is incorrect, it affects the rest of the steps in the construction. Luckily, if artists make mistakes, they can unfold their paper and try again.

Before you begin your project, you must practice these skills:
- Basics: Choose a simple origami animal and create it in on a small, medium and large scale.
- Details: Choose the most successful animal you made. Add details to give the origami more meaning.
- Math: Take a large sheet of paper and cut it into origami squares.
- Technique: Practice making the valley fold, mountain fold, squash fold and reverse fold.
